Sacrificing the Deer Wouldn’t Work

Before taking the County Level Exam, a student went to the temple and prayed to Lord Superior Wen Chang (the God in charge of Literary Achievement), asking for the good fortune of passing the exam, and promising that he would sacrifice a deer as oblation afterwards. As it turns out he passed the exam smoothly, so he killed a deer to use as offering to fulfill his promise.

Later on, before going to the Capital to take the Academy Level Exam, he made the same prayer again, this time offering to sacrifice two deer once his wish got fulfilled. But he died before passing the exam.

Sacrificing the deer for your own profit and benefit – how could you possibly be able to live in peace?
