The Surangama Sutra: Chapter Nine – Section 1

The First Dhyana

“Ananda, if practitioners in the world do not practice meditation, they will not develop wisdom. But if they can at least control their bodies and refrain from sexual desires, at all times steering their minds clear of impure thoughts, then they will not remain in the realm of desire and may be born as Brahma’s retinue in the Heaven of Brahma Retinue.

“For practitioners who have eradicated the habits of desire, their minds are now truly free, and they take delight in following the precepts, at all times practicing the virtue of purity. Thus, they will be born in the Heaven of Brahma Ministers.

“For practitioners who have perfectly mastered their body, mind, and deportment, who have attained complete purity and clarity, they will become Brahma lords governing their Brahma retinues in the Heaven of Great Brahma King.

“Ananda, beings at these three superior levels are not subject to affliction anymore. Although they have not yet cultivated Proper Samadhi, their minds are pure enough that all outflows are stilled. Such a state is called the First Dhyana.”
