The Second Dhyana
“Ananda, above the Brahma Heavens there are gods governing the Brahmas. Those gods have perfected their practice of purity; hence their minds are lucid and unmoving, with lights emitting from the deep tranquility. Thus, they abide in the Heaven of New Light.
“And further up there are gods whose lights illumine and reflect upon each other, generating a web of light throughout the ten directions, and its dazzling brilliance turns everything into crystal. Thus is the Heaven of All-Permeating Light.
“And then there are gods who have perfected their light and have mastered the skillful means of teaching; hence they are able to transmit and transform the purity into boundless applications. Thus is the Heaven of Conveying Light.
“Ananda, in these three superior heavens, all beings are free of worry and distress. Although they have not yet cultivated Proper Samadhi, their minds are pure to the point where all outflows are subdued. Such a state is called the Second Dhyana.”
阿難其次梵天。統攝梵人圓滿梵行。澄心不動寂湛生光。如是一類名少光天。光光相然照耀無盡。映十方界遍成瑠璃。如是一類名無量光天。吸持圓光成就教體。發化清淨應用無盡。如是一類名光音天。阿難此三勝流。一切憂愁所不能逼。雖非正修真三摩地。清淨心中麁漏已伏名為二禪。
