Fifty Demonic States of Mind (11)
“Further, after the sense-perception skandha is gone, while being in the Samadhi with perfect clarity and without any mental distress, the good practitioner may give rise to a longing for supernatural powers and transformations, so he starts investigating how the transformations come about and fervidly desires to possess the powers.
“Seizing this long-awaited opportunity, a demon from the heavens will descend on someone to possess that person, using him as a mouthpiece to expound his own theories. Without realizing that he’s been possessed, that person will come to the whereabouts of the good practitioner who seeks for supernatural powers, claiming that he has attained ultimate Nirvana, and setting up an altar to preach the demon’s methods.
“Holding fire in his hands, this possessed person may distribute flame atop each listener’s head. The flames can rise to several feet high, yet no one will feel hot or get burned. Or he may walk on water as if on dry land, or sit still in midair, or enter with ease into a jar or a bag. Or he may pass through closed windows or walls without obstruction. He may only lose his composure when being attacked by weapons.
“Wearing the clothing of a layman, receiving bows from Bhikshus, he self-proclaims to be a Buddha. He slanders the practice of Dhyana and the keeping of precepts. He scolds his followers, exposes their private affairs and subject them to ridicule and contempt.
“He often speaks of supernatural powers and self-mastery. And he may enable people to have glimpses of Buddha-lands, although of course those are unreal and created only by the demon’s power to delude people. Instead of condemning lewd acts, he praises lustful indulgence of all sorts and use them to transmit his teachings.
“This demon may be a goblin of heaven and earth, or of mountain, or of sea, or of wind, or of river, or of dirt, or of grass-and-tree, that has evolved over eons; or a goblin of dragon, or an ascetic master reborn as a goblin or possessed by a goblin because his body does not decay in time, a goblin who then turns into a demon in its old age to disturb practitioners. Once it has become weary of the game, it will abandon the person it possessed, and subsequently the followers and the ‘teacher’ will get into trouble with the law.
“You all should be vigilant about this and steer clear of the unfortunate cycle of transmigration; otherwise, if you become confused, you will fall into the Unrelenting Hell.”
