Fifty Demonic States of Mind (12)
“Further, after the sense-perception skandha is gone, while being in the Samadhi with perfect clarity and without any mental distress, the good practitioner may crave for entering cessation, so he starts investigating the nature of mental transformation, fervidly seeking the profound depths of emptiness.
“Seizing this long-awaited opportunity, a demon from the heavens will descend on someone to possess that person, using him as a mouthpiece to expound his own theories. Without realizing that he’s been possessed, that person will come to the whereabouts of the good practitioner who seeks vacuity, claiming that he has attained ultimate Nirvana, and setting up an altar to preach the demon’s methods.
“In the midst of the preaching, he may suddenly make his body disappear, and no one in the audience can see him; then out of nowhere, he reappears again. He has total mastery over his appearing and disappearing. He can also make his body as transparent as crystal. Or he may emit the fragrance of sandalwood through his hands or feet. Or he may turn his feces and urine into sweet rock candy.
“He slanders the precepts and slights the monastics. He often says that there is no cause and no effect, that there is no afterlife, that there is no rebirth, that there is no distinction between sages and ordinary beings. Although he can enter a state of empty stillness at will, he covertly indulges in acts of greed and desire. People who are subjected to his lusts will also adopt the views of nihility and abandon the teaching of cause and effect.
“This demon was originally a vital energy generated by an eclipse of the sun or moon, then incubated into precious metal or gemstone like gold or jade, or some rare medicinal fungus or herb, or special creature like unicorn, phoenix, tortoise or crane. Having passed tens of thousands of years without dying, it became a spirit to be reborn into this world. And then it turned into a demon in its old age to disturb practitioners. Once it has become weary of the game, it will abandon the person it possessed, and subsequently the followers and the ‘teacher’ will get into trouble with the law.
“You all should be vigilant about this and steer clear of the unfortunate cycle of transmigration; otherwise, if you become confused, you will fall into the Unrelenting Hell.”
