“Further, Ananda, after the sense-perception skandha is gone, while being in the Samadhi with perfect clarity and without any negative mental state, the good practitioner may give rise to a craving for roaming freely about, so he fervidly sets forth his concentrated thinking to seek for adventure.
“Then, seizing this long-awaited opportunity, a demon from the heavens will descend on someone to possess that person, using him as a mouthpiece to expound his own theories. Without realizing that he’s been possessed, that person will come to the whereabouts of the good practitioner who craves to roam, claiming that he has attained ultimate Nirvana, and setting up an altar to preach the demon’s methods. His own appearance will not change, but he may cause his audience to suddenly see themselves sitting on jeweled lotus-flowers, and their entire bodies transformed into purple-golden light. Everyone will feel that they have acquired something unprecedented.
“The practitioner then be fooled into thinking that the demon-possessed person is a Bodhisattva. Lust and disorder will enter his mind, causing him to break the Buddha’s precepts and to engage in all sorts of indulgence.
“The possessed person may announce that Buddhas are born into this world, that somewhere someone is the manifestation of a certain Buddha, or of a particular Bodhisattva who has come to transcend worldly people. Witnessing this, people give rise to fervent admiration, their wrong views become wildly overgrown, and their Seeds of Wisdom are destroyed.
“This demon is a drought ghost who has turned into a demon in its old age to disturb practitioners. Once it has become weary of the game, it will abandon the person it possessed, and subsequently the followers and the ‘teacher’ will get into trouble with the law.
“You all should be vigilant about this and steer clear of the unfortunate cycle of transmigration; otherwise, if you become confused, you will fall into the Unrelenting Hell.”
阿难！又善男子，受阴虚妙，不遭邪虑，圆定发明，三摩地中，心爱游荡，飞其精思，贪求经历。尔时天魔 ，候得其便，飞精附人，口说经法。其人亦不觉知魔着，亦言自得无上涅槃，来彼求游善男子处，敷座说法。自形无变，其听法者 ，忽见自身坐宝莲华，全体化成紫金光聚；一众听人，各各如是，得未曾有。是人愚迷，惑为菩萨，淫逸其心，破佛律仪，潜行贪欲。口中好言诸佛应世，某处某人当是某佛化身来此，某人即是某菩萨等来化人间。其人见故，心生渴仰 ，邪见密兴，种智消灭。此名魃鬼，年老成魔，恼乱是人，厌足心生，去彼人体，弟子与师俱陷王难。汝当先觉，不入轮回；迷惑不知，堕无间狱。
