Fifty Demonic States of Mind (6)
“Further, after the sense-perception skandha is gone, while being in the Samadhi with perfect clarity and without any worries, the good practitioner may give rise to a craving for spiritual unity, so he fervidly refines his mind to the subtlest level to seek for merging his mind with all the sages.
“And so, seizing this long-awaited opportunity, a demon from the heavens will descend on someone to possess that person, using him as a mouthpiece to expound his own theories. Without realizing that he’s been possessed, that person will come to the whereabouts of the good practitioner who craves for unity, claiming that he has attained ultimate Nirvana, and setting up an altar to preach the demon’s methods. He will not cause any external changes to himself or his audience, but he will make them start experiencing ‘mental transformation’ even before hearing the teaching, by enabling them either to recall their past lives, or to read other people’s minds, or to see the hells, or to know all the good and evil occurrences in the human realm. Or he may enable them to speak in verses spontaneously or to recite sutras effortlessly. Everyone will rejoice in their newly acquired capabilities.
“The practitioner then be fooled into thinking that the demon-possessed person is a Bodhisattva. Obsession and attachment will enter his mind, causing him to break the Buddha’s precepts and engaging in all sorts of indulgence.
“The possessed person will ardently preach that which Buddhas are greater and which are lesser, which Buddhas are senior and which are junior, which Buddhas are true and which are false, which Buddhas are male and which are female, and will say the same of Bodhisattvas. Hearing this, people get brainwashed, easily carried away by deviant ideas.
“This demon is an animal-possessing ghost who has turned into a demon in its old age to disturb practitioners. Once it has become weary of the game, it will abandon the person it possessed, and subsequently the followers and the ‘teacher’ will get into trouble with the law.
“You all should be vigilant about this and steer clear of the unfortunate cycle of transmigration; otherwise, if you become confused, you will fall into the Unrelenting Hell.”
