The Third of Ten Wrong States – Believing That There Is Permanent Abode
“Again, the good practitioner has now completely emptied the skandha of mental formations and put an end to mental arising and ceasing, but he has not perfectly realized the subtle wonder of Nirvana. If at this point, he regards what he is returning to as a permanent abiding, then he may mistake it for a place where his body and mind, as well as all things in the ten directions come forth, then he may further mistakenly regard this place where everything comes forth as a truly permanent body that is not subject to birth and annihilation. Since he himself is actually still subject to death and rebirth, it is premature for him to speculate that he is now abiding in permanence. And by being confused about non-arising, he also becomes confused about arising and perishing, and gradually he becomes content to abide in total confusion, even interpreting it as the ultimate truth.
“Thus, he falls into the wrong view of taking the consciousness skandha as permanent and taking the god Ishvara as his companion. Confused about the Bodhi of the Buddhas, he wanders off from the Path of the Buddhas’ Right Knowledge and Proper Views.
“This is the third wrong state, where the practitioner believes that there is a permanent abode where he comes from, which leads him to stray far away from perfect enlightenment, to turn his back on the City of Nirvana, and ultimately to sow the seeds of being reborn in a place that he wrongly regards as being perfect.”
