The Sixth of Ten Wrong States – Believing that The Basis of Consciousness Is a Void
“Again, the good practitioner has completely emptied the skandha of mental formations and put an end to mental arising and ceasing, but he has not perfectly realized the subtle wonder of Nirvana. Regarding the perfect illumination of his consciousness, if he speculates that there is a void within it, if he denies the myriad transformations and takes their permanent cessation as his refuge, and if he believes that such understanding is the ultimate truth, then he makes the mistake of taking what is not a permanent abiding place to be a refuge. And as a result, those who dwell in the void of the Heaven of neither Thought nor Nonthought become his companions. Confused about the Bodhi of the Buddhas, he wanders off from the Path of the Buddhas’ Right Knowledge and Proper Views.
“This is the sixth wrong state, where the practitioner speculates that the basis of his consciousness is a void, in which everything has ceased to be. Such speculation leads him to stray far away from perfect enlightenment, to turn his back on the City of Nirvana, and ultimately to sow the seeds of being reborn into a state of cessation.”
