The Ninth of Ten Wrong States – Dwelling in the State of Arhat
“Further, the good practitioner has completely emptied the skandha of mental formations and put an end to mental arising and ceasing, but he has not perfectly realized the subtle wonder of Nirvana. Now in his discernment about all categories of life, he starts to distinguish between the fine and the coarse, as well as to determine what is true and what is false, seeking only the interplay of cause and effect, and turning his back on the Way of Purity. In the practice of seeing suffering, eliminating accumulation, realizing cessation, and cultivating the Way, once he comes to abiding in cessation, he stops and makes no further progress. He even speculates cessation as the ultimate truth. Thus, he makes the mistake of becoming a Hearer with Fixed Nature. Unlearned and arrogant practitioners become his companions. Confused about the Bodhi of the Buddhas, he wanders off from the Path of the Buddhas’ Right Knowledge and Proper Views.
“This is the ninth wrong state, where the practitioner perfects the responsive essence of the mind and realizes the fruition of cessation. Instead of advancing towards perfect enlightenment, he proceeds in the opposite direction and turns his back on the City of Nirvana, thus sowing the seeds in his continuity as an Arhat with restricted emptiness.”
